the walk in from the gate
Ten minutes end to end if you do not stop, which nobody does. This is the property in the order you actually meet it.
The gate
The sign on the road, lit after dark. Turn in here.
The open ground
The first thing inside the gate, and the biggest single space on the property. Cars go here; so do tents, bonfires, cricket and football.
The badminton court
A full court, with a stairway running along one side that people sit on to watch. It doubles for volleyball and throwball.
The garden
Two crossings strung between the trees — a single line, and a rope bridge beside it. A seesaw, a swing, and a shower rigged overhead for a rain dance.
The stone path
Where the property stops being open and starts being quiet. The path runs between planted beds and takes you to the cottages.
The ten cottages
Ten of them, tiled and low, set along the path with a verandah running the length of the block.
Suki’s Kitchen
Long tables under a tiled roof, laid for one sitting. Menus and timings are set by the kitchen each day.
The banquet hall
Directly opposite the kitchen. White walls, a false ceiling hung with light, a low stage at the far end.
